Senator Brian Schatz is hiring a legislative staffer to lead on the senator’s work related to technology, telecommunications, and related policy areas.  The staffer will support the senator as a member of the Commerce Committee (and past chair of its Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation, and the Internet) and the Appropriations Committee.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities for this position include:

  • advising the senator on technology and telecommunications policy;
  • developing and advancing policy initiatives;
  • preparing for committee hearings and markups and staffing the senator at those meetings;
  • supporting oversight of federal agencies;
  • addressing external requests and representing the office;
  • managing the senator’s tech/telecom team; and
  • coordinating with all components of the team (including DC, state, and committee staffs) to support the senator’s work.

Experience and Skills

The successful applicant will:

·         be extremely knowledgeable about technology and/or telecommunications policy;

·         have significant understanding of relevant agencies, including their budgets, programs, and policy/regulatory processes;

·         be incredibly driven;

·         have excellent communications, analytical, negotiation, and organizational skills;

·         have experience managing a team;

·         work well as part of a team; and

·         have experience with coalition building and policy messaging.

Senator Schatz’s office is a great place to work.  The office is made up of more than 50 driven, talented, personable staffers, and it is one of the most diverse and highly educated offices in the U.S. Senate.  Staffers help to advocate for the people of Hawaii, make sure the federal government does what it should, and communicate how government works for people.  Most staffers are based in offices in Washington, D.C., and Honolulu—though some staffers work on the islands of Hawaii, Kauai, and Maui.
