Senate Passes Ten Year Ban on Undetectable Guns
Schatz, Senate Leaders Work to Update Plastic Gun Laws to Keep Communities Safe, Prevent Gun Violence
Washington, DC - After Republicans blocked updated safety measures to ban at-home production of plastic guns, which U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i) and Senate leaders were working to pass, Senator Schatz said that the ten year extension of the ban on plastic, undetectable guns does not go far enough to protect Hawai‘i families. The Senate passed the House version of the Undetectable Firearms Act, which did not address technological advances in at–home plastic gun production.
“We should be able to take action on stopping homemade, virtually invisible firearms. This is a no-brainer,” said U.S. Senator Brian Schatz. “Families across Hawai‘i and the United States deserve more than just an extension of the ban. They deserve to know that it is illegal for dangerous people to make their own plastic gun at home. We need to stop these guns to help police and security fight criminals and keep our schools, airports, and communities safe. And we're going to keep working to pass these safety measures.”
The Senate passed the Undetectable Firearms Act unanimously. The bill did nothing to prevent homemade production of plastic, undetectable guns using devices like 3-D printers. Senator Schatz is a co-sponsor of the Undetectable Firearms Modernization Act, which would close this loophole. However, Senator Grassley objected to passing this fix by amendment. The Senate passed the Undetectable Firearms Act without closing the undetectable homemade guns loophole.
