Schatz Statement on ILWU Petition to U.S. Department of Labor
HONOLULU – U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i) issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) approving the International Longshore and Warehouse Union’s (ILWU) petition requesting adjustment assistance for bulk sugar workers as a result of the closing of HC&S:
“Truckers that hauled bulk sugar were directly and severely impacted by the closing of HC&S, and I’m very glad the Department of Labor approved the ILWU’s petition for assistance. Federal funding from the USDOL will help displaced workers make ends meet and provide opportunities to gain new skills and find new jobs. Losing a job can have a devastating impact on families and this funding will be able to provide some relief.”
