Schatz Objects To Republican Attempt To Add Unconstitutional Citizenship Question To Census

Schatz Has Led Efforts To Protect Census From Political Interference

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i) today objected to an effort by Senate Republicans to politicize the census and add an unconstitutional question on citizenship.

“I have lost count of the number of times that Republicans have tried and failed to add citizenship questions to the census,” said Senator Schatz. “We have to see this for what it is: an attempt to reduce the count in immigrant communities. This was never about enforcing the law. It is a pretext to scare people, particularly immigrants, out of taking the census – out of being counted at all. To undercount people in favor of one political party.

Schatz has led efforts in the Senate to stop Republicans from politicizing the census. Ahead of the 2020 census, Schatz called on Trump administration officials to keep unconstitutional inquiries on citizenship out of the questionnaire.
