Schatz Named To Key Post On Senate Foreign Relations Committee

WASHINGTON – The United States Senate Democratic leadership today announced the selection of U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i) to serve on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

“As we work to confront the global climate crisis and reinforce Hawai‘i’s key role in rebuilding our relationships in the Asia Pacific region, this will put me in a better position to serve Hawai‘i and the nation and represent our values on the global stage,” said Senator Schatz. “It is an honor, and I look forward to working with the committee and the new administration to shape American foreign policy and advance U.S. leadership around the world.”

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is one of the original ten standing committees of the Senate. Throughout its history, the committee has been instrumental in developing and influencing United States foreign policy. It holds jurisdiction over all diplomatic nominations, and has historically assisted in the negotiation of treaties. Through these powers, the committee has helped shape foreign policy of broad significance, in matters of war and peace and international relations.

Senator Schatz will retain his seats on the Senate Committee on Appropriations, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, and the Senate Select Committee on Ethics. Schatz will also continue to serve as Chief Deputy Whip, a leadership position that gives him a key role in shaping policy and communications for the new Senate Democratic majority.
