Schatz: Department of Interior Committed to Parity for Native Hawaiians
Schatz votes in favor for Obama’s Interior Secretary Nominee Sally Jewell
WASHINGTON- During today’s Energy and Natural Resources Committee meeting, Senator Brian Schatz made clear that President Obama’s nominee for Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell will work with the Hawaii Congressional Delegation on Hawai‘i’s priorities. Schatz confirmed that the Department of Interior will remain committed to ensuring Native Hawaiians are on equal footing with Alaska Natives and Native American Indians. Schatz also underscored the Department of Interior’s continued commitment to addressing the financial burden on the state of Hawai‘i as a result of the federal government’s Compact of Freely Associated States and the need for Congress to act on this issue.
“Sally Jewell is a proven leader and is committed to working with our delegation in ensuring that Native Hawaiians are on equal footing with Alaska Natives and Native American Indians,” said Schatz. “Over the last few weeks, Sally Jewell has affirmed that she is dedicated to leading the Department of Interior and will work towards Hawai‘i’s priorities. I look forward to her full confirmation in the weeks ahead.”
