Schatz Announces $4 Million Grant for Wastewater System Improvements on Island of Hawai‘i

Today, Senator Brian Schatz announced that the County of Hawai‘i's Department of Environmental Management will receive a $4.02 million grant and a low-interest, 35 year loan of $2.4 million from the Office of Rural Development at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The award is facilitated through the Waste Disposal Loan and Grant program to improve and expand the existing wastewater system in the Lono Kona subdivision in Kailua-Kona.


“It is critical infrastructure investments like the wastewater expansion and improvements in Kailua-Kona that invariably bring communities together and improve the lives of our state’s families,” said Senator Brian Schatz. “I am pleased to announce this $4 million federal grant and loan that will provide peace of mind for local families and the needed resources to address our communities’ developing needs.”

According to the USDA’s Office of Rural Development, the County of Hawaii’s Department of Environmental Management will receive a $2,437,000 loan and $4,024,800 grant through the Waste Disposal Loan and Grant program for improvements to and expansion of the existing wastewater system in the Lono Kona subdivision located in Kailua-Kona, Island & County of Hawaii.
