Schatz Announces $1.3 Million in Affordable Housing Grants
Today, Senator Brian Schatz announced the U.S. Department of Agriculture will award a total of $1,383,302 in Self-Help Housing Technical Assistance Grants to two Hawai‘i organizations. These grants offered through the Office of Rural Development provide assistance in recruitment, screening, loan packaging, and related activities for prospective self-help housing applicants.
“One of the greatest challenges for families in rural Hawai‘i is the high cost of housing. This funding will help two worthy non-profits provide underserved families with safe, affordable housing,” Senator Schatz said. “This funding will go towards hiring personnel to carry out the technical assistance programs, paying fees for training self-help group members in construction techniques and even helping to purchase or rent power tools families need to build their homes.”
- $893,302 for Self-Help Housing Corporation of Hawai‘i in Honolulu: This project will consist of 44 units to be developed within a two-year period on the Island of Oahu. There will be 32 homes built in Ma’ili, Oahu, and 12 homes in Waianae, Oahu.
- $490,000 for Hawaii Island Community Development Corporation in Hilo: This project will consist of 20 units to be developed within a two-year period on the Island of Hawaii. There will be 9 homes built in the Hawaiian Paradise Park Phase 4 subdivision in Keaau, and 11 homes in the Kumakua Phase 3 subdivision in Kapa’au.
