Hawai‘i Congressional Delegation: Navy’s Red Hill Failures Unacceptable, Must Immediately Implement IG Recommendations
Delegation Requested IG Investigation Into Red Hill Leak, Helped Secure More Than A Billion Dollars In Federal Funding To Shut Down, Clean Up Red Hill
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i) and Mazie Hirono (D-Hawai‘i) and U.S. Representatives Ed Case (D-Hawai‘i) and Jill Tokuda (D-Hawai‘i) today released the following joint statement on two reports issued by the Department of Defense Office of Inspector General on the overall safety of the Defense Fuel Support Point Joint Base Pearl Harbor–Hickam. The delegation called for the independent investigations in November 2021 and December 2021.
“These independent reports make clear that for decades the Navy and the Department of Defense have failed to manage fuel and water operations at Red Hill and across Joint Base Peal Harbor-Hickam to a standard that protects the health and safety of the people of Hawai‘i. It’s outrageous and unacceptable.
“The Navy must take full responsibility for its failures and immediately implement the recommendations from the Inspector General in order to address the ongoing impacts to public health and the environment. The delegation requested this investigation, and we will continue to exercise our oversight duties and ensure that the Navy and the Department of Defense fully comply with the recommendations outlined in these reports.”
