$1.6 Million Headed To Kauai To Repair Wainiha Powerhouse Road After Severe Flooding, Landslides In 2018

HONOLULU — Today, U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i) and Kauai Mayor Derek Kawakami announced that the Department of Public Works will receive $1,638,727.50 to repair Wainiha Powerhouse Road on Kauai. In 2018, Kauai experienced severe storms and record rainfall, resulting in flooding and landslides that damaged the road.
 
“Communities on Kauai depend on safe roadways, and this new funding will help us rebuild from the severe storms two years ago,” said Senator Schatz, member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. “As we continue to recover, I will keep fighting for more federal resources at every opportunity.”

“Mahalo to Sen. Schatz and to our Federal Delegation for their assistance in securing this funding for the community affected by the devastating and historic April 2018 flood,” said Mayor Derek S. K. Kawakami. “The extent of damages to Wainiha Powerhouse Road were extensive, and this Federal funding ensures that this roadway is repaired for our North Shore residents who continue to be strong and resilient.”

This new federal grant came from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). To date, Hawai‘i has received more than a half a billion dollars in federal relief funding to help the state recover from the 2018 natural disasters.
