As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, Senator Schatz is leading efforts to deliver federal resources to the Native Hawaiian community.
As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs and as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Schatz has delivered millions of dollars in federal funding to support Native Hawaiian education, health, and housing programs. He has authored legislation to support Hawaiian language education, promote Native Hawaiian homeownership, and expand opportunities for Native Hawaiian-owned small businesses.
As a result of legislation led by Senator Schatz, the Smithsonian constructed the Native American Veterans Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. to honor military heroes from native communities. And in September 2016, legislation authored by Senator Schatz to empower native communities and expand unique cultural tourism opportunities in Hawai‘i and across the country was signed into law.
